Raising the public consciousness, awareness and understanding of environmental issues is critical for support of greenspace initiatives and for changing behavior patterns away from those that are detrimental to a healthy and attractive region. A coordinated set of educational initiatives which target various groups are important for creating deep and broadbased support and participation. This initiative would include such actions as:

  • Development of programs at the primary and secondary education levels which focus on environmental issues.

  • Creation of partnerships among universities and other public entities for research, analysis and support.

  • Education of local officials and design professionals on environmental laws and green design standards and principles.

More programs that target environmental awareness toward children in urban neighborhoods are needed.
  • Creation of fact sheets, brochures and a web-site which provides information on environmental background, issues, model ordinances, events and links to other environmental programs and funding sources.

  • Increased use of the media to educate the public about local environmental issues.

  • Establishment of a series of ongoing programs, workshops and seminars on particular topics of environmental significance.
