SOCIAL IMPACTS
In Areas Experiencing Growth
Many of the land use impacts fostered by highway improvements will have an effect on the social fabric of areas
in Cuyahoga and Medina Counties experiencing growth:
- Additional public service costs to provide new roads and public utilities to new development that is
induced by the expanded highway capacity will be borne by the existing residents and businesses;
- Changes in the type or pace of development, due to new types of development in an undeveloped area
or reinforcement and acceleration of a changing pattern of development in an area already undergoing change;
- Changes in the physical form and aesthetics of an area or community such as from concentrated small
centers surrounded by open areas to an amorphous form of physical development lacking distinquishing
characteristics or centers;
- Changes in local perception of overall quality of life and the divergence of what the community is
becoming from how the community as a whole wishes it to be;
- Real or perceived changes in social enhancement or dysfunction. For example, new highway facilities
in Medina County that are part of the Cleveland or Akron transportation system may be perceived as bringing
Medina County "closer" to these urban centers;
- Value conflict between long-time and new residents;
- New competitors for community leadership roles; and
- Decreasing proportion of informal relationships.
