Cuyahoga County Land Cover Maps

The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission has developed a land cover map for the entire county. The analysis was based on color infrared imagery (CIR) provided by the Ohio Statewide Imagery Program (OSIP) in spring 2011. The imagery was supplemented with other available data on known features, including public roadway pavement and water bodies.

The land cover classes are:

  • Forest: Typically consists of mature trees. Tree canopy is presumed to be underestimated, as data was captured under spring "leaf-off" conditions.
  • Impervious: Typically man-made features, such as buildings, roadways, and parking lots.
  • Water: Bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, larger streams, and some wetlands.
  • Grass: Includes shrub and small trees.
  • Barren areas: Includes plowed fields, beaches, hard-packed grassy areas.

Land cover maps are available below in PDF format (at 36 by 36 inches) for each of the County's 59 communities. In addition, a spreadsheet is available with statistics (.XLS) on each of the communities, including acreage by land cover type, a percentage calculation, and the community's rank among all the communities.
